Switching to VoIP? Here’s What Happens to Your Existing Phone Numbers
One of the most common hesitations businesses have about switching to VoIP is the phone number question: Do we have to give up our existing numbers? The short answer is no. The longer answer involves a process called number porting — and understanding it will save you from surprises during your transition.
What Is Number Porting?
Number porting is the process of transferring your existing phone numbers from your current carrier to a new one. In the US, you have a legal right to keep your phone numbers when you switch providers. Your new VoIP provider handles the porting request on your behalf.
What You’ll Need to Start a Port
Your new provider will need: the exact account name and service address on file with your current carrier, your account number, a recent bill, and sometimes a PIN. Getting these details right the first time matters — mismatches are the most common cause of port delays.
How Long Does Porting Take?
Simple ports from a major carrier typically complete in 5–10 business days. Complex ports from legacy PRI circuits or older regional carriers can take 2–4 weeks. Your provider should give you a Firm Order Commitment (FOC) date once the port is approved.
What Happens on Port Day
On the FOC date, your numbers transfer and your old carrier’s service ends simultaneously. This is why your new VoIP system must be fully set up and tested before the port completes. A good provider will have your system running on temporary numbers during setup so your team can train on it before cutover.
Don’t Cancel Your Old Service Early
If you cancel your current phone service before the port completes, you lose the numbers permanently — they return to the carrier’s pool. Keep your existing service active until you have written confirmation that the port is complete.
What About Toll-Free Numbers?
Toll-free numbers port separately through the Somos RespOrg system. The timeline is similar — 5–10 business days — but flag any toll-free numbers early so they’re included in the plan. Talk to us about making the switch with zero disruption to your existing numbers.
